Wu Xing - action | fantasy WebComic Review
Updated: Nov 20, 2020
Hi! My name is Imani aka MaddMoniArt, I’m the creator of the psychological thriller manga Bleakville, and the founder of MaddIndies, a blog where I review and support independent webcomics.
Today, we're going to be looking at WU XING, the action, fantasy webcomic created by CorissaBees. I'm going to give you my spoiler-free, first impression, review of the plot, characters, artwork, and my overall thoughts as I read through the first chapter.
Overview
"A boy named Fawei discovers that the world as he knows it is not what it seems. When a sword-wielding stranger arrives and disrupts the tranquility of his village, Fawei is forced to confront his own destiny. In the face of overwhelming adversity, He must travel across vast distances in search of those who, like him, have the power to bring harmony and balance to both Heaven and Earth." - CorissaBees
PLOT
According to Wuxingcomic.com, "This fantasy-adventure story is strongly influenced by the rich culture, fantastic legends, and amazing characters born out of ancient China."
We open up with a mysterious woman, painting in a scroll, explaining the importance of the balance in the Wu Xing system, and how easily it can be broken. You'll scroll through the comic watching the painting come to life with each delicate stroke of the paintbrush.
Wu Xing is the "Chinese five elements in daily life that were regarded as the foundation of everything in the universe and natural phenomena. They have their own characters and they can generate or destroy one other."
The world-building in Wu Xing brings you into the ancient feudal era in Asia.
(think of shows like Inuyasha and Rurouni Kenshin for example.)
You will be able to hear the atmosphere with birds chirping, bracelets shackling, and sandals hitting the dirt road. The main characters live on a farm and care deeply about their family and friends. You'll understand their lifestyle and the danger outside their village because the world is being brought to life through their conversations.
CHARACTERS
Chapter One had a hand full of characters introduced. Each of them appears to have a purpose and it seems they will play a fulfilling role in the series. They each have a unique designs making them distinguishable. The interaction the characters have with each are heartwarming and pulls you into the story. Fawei is a likable protagonist for an adventure series, He comes off as innocent and you want to follow him on his journey.
ART
The art of Wu Xing is very Shonen like. It has clean line art, expressive characters, and detailed enough backgrounds. The style is monochrome and the figures pop out from the background. There's good movement, composition, and sound effects making each panel interesting.
Conclusion
I enjoy a full circle and that's what Wu Xing accomplishes masterfully in the first chapter. I honestly can't wait for the next chapters. I'll definitely keep following this series, so don't be surprised if it ends up on MaddIndies again. Make sure to check it out to see exactly what I'm talking about.
