Lycoris rising webcomic first impression review + interview

If you'd watch a Legend of Zelda anime, then Lycoris Rising is for you. It's a Fantasy, Action, Webcomic Created by DaphnePanda. On my busy schedule, I read the prologue and beginning of chapter 1. I also interviewed the creator, for a behind-the-scenes experience. Get ready to read my spoiler-free, first impression review.

Synopsis

King. Assassin. Spy. Informant. The lives of these four people are tied not only to each other but to the fate of a country. Given their skillsets, preventing the collapse of a nation isn't an unreasonable task. The catch? They have conflicting agendas.... and are on opposing sides.

FIRST IMPRESSION

Beautiful and emotional, DaphnePanda Captured the atmosphere with breathtaking visuals. It has a strong opening, great artwork, and animation (YES ANIMATION). The cast of characters all have a gorgeous design that fits the time they're living in.

It's listed as an action, fantasy webcomic but it also has Drama, Suspense, thriller, and a little Romance. Each panel doesn't miss out on important details. The pacing with the action scenes and dialogue complement each other. It's like a cutscene from a video game in story mode. I was easily following what was going on, like for instance, when an arrow was shattered against armor.

King Luciel Margreave is the main character and he has some type of foresight ability where he, unfortunately, keeps seeing tragedies. I was only able to read the prologue but there is a whole story, as of right now, there are 3 chapters including the prologue. Bloody war and beautiful cherry blossom... If that's you're the type of thing, go and check it out, Lycoris Rising.

Interview

  1. How long have you been creating comic books?

    1. Lycoris Rising is my first comic, and I’ve been drawing it for about a year and a half now. The story, on the other hand, I’ve had in mind for over a decade. It started out as Zelda fanfic and after several rewrites turned into what it is today!

  2. What inspirations did you have behind this project?

    1. There are so many inspirations! Each rewrite came with its own influences, and there were a LOT of rewrites. I won’t list them all out though, so here are a select few: Psycho Pass, Tokyo Ghoul, Hwarang, Violet Evergarden

  3. What are the main themes behind the series?

    1. Oof. Again, there are so many. We’re still pretty early as far as the actual story goes, so here are a few that readers can glimpse from what’s already out: redemption and healing, courage and perseverance, fighting against fate.

  4. What do you have to say about a certain character from your series?

    1. This’ll tie into question 7 a little. Luciel might seem like an angsty little sick boy, but don’t underestimate him. A small glimpse of his badass-ness is coming up soon.

  5. How do you come up with the characters in your story?

    1. I could write an essay on this, so I’ll skip instead.

  6. How long are you planning this series to run?

    1. Three “Acts” or “Seasons,” and we’re not even halfway through Act 1. I have the story written out but haven’t parsed it into individual episodes, so I can’t give a definitive answer. I’m going to guesstimate 170+ episodes though (on Webtoon. Double that for Tapas).

  7. Any teasers you want to give your readers?

    1. Read closely. I like to drop subtle hints.

  8. Anything else you want your readers to know?

    1. Thank you so much for reading Lycoris Rising! I love you all so much! If you have anything you’d like to add either in the Interludes or post-chapter info panels, don’t be afraid to let me know!

Feedback

The art is great, some of the panels aren't consistent with the others. You have the skills to do clean line art, and fine coloring so doesn't rush greatness.
